                           AAUW THEME:
Education as the Gateway to Women's Economic Security

Why this particular theme?  According to research from a variety of sources, economic security is one of the top issues of interest and concern for all women.  It has become abundantly clear from recent research including AAUW's Women at Work (2003) and Gains in Learning, Gaps in Earning, published this year, that women today are working more than ever yet remain crowded in undervalued, lower-paying occupations  with fewer benefits for themselves and the children and elderly for whom they often care.  Ensuring equity for women and girls--from pre-K through retirement and at all points in between--has become our greatest challenge.

What does this new theme mean for AAUW?  It will serve as a guide for new AAUW programs.  It will provide a framework for the creation of focused and coordinated programming for AAUW that will be developed at the national level, and refined and implemented by states, branches, and other institutional and community partners in the same fashion as many of our most successful program and research initiatives have been structured in the past.  It will focus our work as the continued leader in equity and education for women and girls, proving that for all of our accomplishments, equity is still very much an issue.

Need programming ideas related to this theme?

Florida's Financial Independence for Girls (FIG) Information is is available for you to read or download. The first document, FIG Module Descriptions and Teachers Notes, is identical to the information available on the AAUW website.  It includes an explanation of how the program got started; an overview of the lessons that have been taught by Florida branches, teachers notes, and a list of resources.  The second document, Eight Sample FIG Lesson Plans, includes suggestions for getting this program started in your community and eight lesson plans covering  the most basic economic information teenage girls need.

The most recent program released by AAUW regarding this them is the Pay Equity Resource Kit.  Pay Equity Day is Monday April 22nd.  To help you and your branch to take action on special day click on Pay Equity Resource Kit to provide you action ideas to do this on the 2008 Pay Equity Day.
