2010 AAUW FLORIDA CONVENTION RESULTS

PRE-CONVENTION WORKSHOP: Putting Mission into Motion: The Search for a Good Programmatic Fit

Branch presidents and others discussed a variety of AAUW programs including those that are readily available as programs in a box that would be appropriate for a statewide undertaking. The group selected two program initiatives for AAUW Florida and its branches for fiscal year 2010-2011 These are STEM and Pay Equity.  All branches who have already had such a program are strongly encouraged to submit the particulars about their program to the AAUW Florida Web Manager so they can be listed on this website for other branches to learn about.  Branches wishing to emulate one of these programs should get in touch with the contact person for that program.  The submission form will be available on the website forms page very soon.

The state board created a fund that will be used to help branches finance the STEM or Pay Equity programs they decide to undertake.  The application form to apply for these funds will be available before the end of the summer. The amount of funding each branch may apply for will be limited to give as many branches as possible an opportunity to receive funding for their project. It's definitely time to start planning your program: what you will do, who your target audience will be, where you will hold it, what you hope to accomplish and how you will do it, etc.

The bylaws proposal to officially change our name to AAUW Florida from Florida-AAUW was approved.  The proposal to allow all of those attending a state convention who were paid members of AAUW Florida to vote at a state convention was soundly defeated.

We were fortunate to have some interesting speakers in attendance at our convention.  They included: Valerie Connors who told us about her experience at the NCCWSL Conference and how it inspired her to conduct a STEM workshop for middle school girls on the campus of USF Manatee/Sarasota last year.  The second and much larger one will take place on May 22, 2010 on the same campus. Dr. Jamie J. Ladge, a contributing author of the Shriver Report, A Woman's Nation Changes Everything,  discussed some of the findings of this widely publicized and read  report.  Dr. Leslie Sue Lieberman, founding Director of the Women's Research Center at USF, discussed female students' perception of what engineers did and projects they worked on and ways that perception could be changed.  Krys Wulff, a director-at-large on the AAUW Board, brought us up to date on AAUW activities that have taken place since the restructuring of AAUW following the AAUW Convention late last June.  All of them were most informative and interesting.  To learn more about these women please click here.

Our speaker for the AAUW Funds Breakfast on Sunday morning was Juddy Karei, an AAUW International Fellow from Kenya.  She is majoring in Religious Studies at the Asbury Theological Seminary in Orlando.  Juddy explained why she feels so strongly  that education plays a critical role in women's lives.  She plans to return to Kenya when her studies at the Seminary are completed  to continue teaching at Discipleship College and work to improve women's lives through education and by working with her church.
